CONFÉRENCE INTERNATIONALE SUR LE FLEUVE NYONG

On December 4, 2025, the Scientific Committee of CIFLEN 2026 met at the CIDE of MINEPDED.
This meeting marked an important step in the scientific preparation of the conference.
It also reinforced the collective commitment to the sustainable protection of the Nyong River.

Clear and Promising Progress

First, Dr. Joseph ONANA presented the progress made by the scientific teams.
The teams structured the priority themes and identified the need for updated data.
Thanks to these advances, CIFLEN 2026 now relies on a solid scientific foundation.
It also prepares guidelines that will support effective and sustainable action.

Next, MINEPDED, represented by Ms. Angèle WADOU, moderated the session.
She facilitated exchanges and encouraged constructive collective reflection.
In addition, she reminded participants of the Ramsar obligations linked to wetland protection.
Her contribution strengthened the coherence and rigor of the discussions.

Key Recommendations to Guide Future Action

Following the presentations, the participants issued several important recommendations.
First, they emphasized the need to involve CAMWATER and all key water-sector stakeholders.
This broader participation will strengthen coordination around the Nyong.
Second, they recommended conducting both current and forward-looking studies.
These analyses will help understand the river’s dynamics more accurately.
Third, they insisted on the strict application of Ramsar requirements.
This approach will ensure compliance with international environmental standards.
Finally, they called for a shared long-term vision for the river.
This vision, centered on “the Nyong we want”, will guide future decisions and priorities.

A Positive Momentum for the River’s Future

In conclusion, the session confirmed the commitment of all involved experts and institutions.
It also demonstrated a collective willingness to move forward with discipline and determination.
With this momentum, CIFLEN 2026 is progressing toward an ambitious and action-oriented conference.
It aims to deliver concrete solutions to protect the Nyong River and support the communities that depend on it.
